Whitetooth Supports Young Skiers & Snowboarders

(Golden, BC) – Thanks to the Whitetooth Affordable Ski Program, 21 local kids will be learning to ski and snowboard this winter.

This winter sports program is designed to encourage children and youth participation where family incomes are limited. The program continues to be supported by Kicking Horse Mountain Resort (KHMR), the Golden Kicking Horse Alpine Team (GKHAT) and the Golden & District Community Foundation-managed (GDCF) Whitetooth Ski Society Fund.

This year saw another increase in applications (41 vs. 36 in 2011/12). However, due to reduced funding available and rising product costs, the Whitetooth Ski Society Fund was able to provide over $12,000 towards the support of 21 children and youth from 8 to 17 years of age with season passes, rental equipment and lessons.

Judy Brook, of Golden Community Resources Society, explained the new challenge faced by the application adjudication committee and the GDCF Board of Directors. “This was a difficult decision to make as we have always had the pleasure of providing some type of assistance to all applicants, but it is understandable that to sustain this program we must have some financial constraints.”

“With the great snow we’ve received this season and the high quality lesson and racing programs available,” detailed Ryan Watmough, GDCF Executive Director, “we know that the participants are going to enjoy their time on the slopes, learn new skills and make many memories.”

If you would like to make a donation to the Whitetooth Ski Society Fund and ensure that future generations of local kids will get to learn to ski and snowboard, please visit www.goldencommunityfoundation.ca and donate through www.canadahelps.org.  And you can also show your support by purchasing a ‘Ski/Ride Whitetooth’ t-shirt from Off The Wall Entertainment, who will donate the proceeds from sales to the Whitetooth Ski Society Fund.

Applications for the 2013/14 intake will be available in October.
